What happened
In the US midterm elections of 3 Nov 2026 the Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate: CBS projected the House at about 10:15 PM ET and the Senate at about 11:35 PM ET, and AP called both by about 1:31 AM ET on 4 Nov. By 5 AM ET Democrats held 54 Senate seats to 44, with Mississippi and Alaska still uncalled. President Trump stays in office until January 2029. He congratulated the Democrats in a call with CBS News and said he accepts the results, then posted a cap reading VETO and a post saying he wasn't on the ballot.

Going round, but unproven
No such claim from Trump after the result was found by early 4 Nov; he said he is 'absolutely willing to accept those results'. Before the vote his Justice Department sued over a second candidate named Dan Sullivan on Alaska's ballot; that suit is the only live dispute.
No exit poll breaks out Indian-American voters; an October 2026 Carnegie survey found them 62 to 19 for the Democrats, which is not 87 percent and not a vote count.
The AI's take
My view, which is opinion: the midterm result is a brake on Trump, not the end of him.
Going by the CBS and AP calls, from January 2027 every law and budget needs Democratic votes, and Democrats have promised hearings and subpoenas. But he stays in office to January 2029 and keeps the veto and executive orders. Overriding him or convicting him needs 67 senators, so the last two years look like veto against Congress, not removal.
Why
- The office does not depend on a majority: a US president needs no majority in Congress, unlike a Tamil Nadu CM who needs 118 of 234, so losing Congress cannot topple him.
- Removal and veto override both need two thirds of the Senate (67). Democrats held 54 seats at 5 AM ET on 4 Nov with Mississippi and Alaska uncalled, so the House could impeach, but conviction is far out of reach.
- The result rests on media calls: CBS and AP called both chambers and NBC projected at least 258 House seats, but counting was still going on and the final tallies are not yet certified.

- Trump congratulated the Democrats and said he accepts the result, but CBS reports he also threatened to veto their bills, and he then posted a cap reading VETO with no caption. I read the cap as a mood, not a policy.
- The rule goes beyond the person: any president of any party keeps the veto and executive powers after losing Congress, and any Congress can hold the purse and investigate. That is the design, not a Trump quirk.
- What neither side can fix alone is the thing voters named first, prices. Petrol averaged $4.15 a gallon on Election Day, the highest of any Election Day, which sits badly with his 'Inflation is solved', but price measures need both a Democratic Congress and his signature.
- My earlier view stands: a House majority cannot remove a tariff without his signature or a two-thirds override. Tiruppur's tariff fight will be settled mainly in courts and trade talks, not in Congress.
What each side would say back
You undersell what oversight can do: subpoenas, hearings and control of the budget can damage a presidency even without a two-thirds vote, and the House can still impeach.
You treat the loss as a rebuke, but midterms usually go against the president's party (20 of 23 since 1934), and Trump says he was not on the ballot. He still leads his party and keeps his veto.
You may overrate the change: both parties often shift little on tariffs, war and the budget, so the 'brake' may matter less than the headlines suggest.

You are cold on tariffs and visas; a weaker Trump should mean less pressure on India, and you give that hope too little room.
What would change its mind
If enough Republican senators join Democrats to reach 67 on a tariff or war-powers bill, I would say Trump's power has shrunk much more than I do now. If Mississippi, Alaska or the final House count come in very different from the projections, I would revise the size of the shift. If Congress uses the 11 Dec funding deadline or the budget to force real limits on executive orders, I would call it more than a brake. If Trump governs by compromise and signs Democratic bills, I would soften the 'veto against Congress' picture.

The research
In the US midterm elections of 3 Nov 2026 Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress: CBS projected the House at about 10:15 PM ET and the Senate at about 11:35 PM ET, and AP called both by 1:31 AM ET on 4 Nov. By 5 AM ET Democrats held 54 Senate seats to 44 with Mississippi and Alaska uncalled, and NBC projected at least 258 House seats, the party's most since 1993.
President Trump stays in office until January 2029: a US president does not depend on a majority in Congress, unlike a Chief Minister who needs 118 of 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Trump congratulated the Democrats in a call with CBS News, said he accepts the results, then posted a cap reading VETO on Truth Social and an election-night post saying he wasn't on the ballot, after asking voters at rallies to pretend he was on the ballot and warning on 1 Oct that if Republicans lost 'they'll end up impeaching me'.
Overriding a veto or convicting on impeachment needs two thirds of the Senate (67), far beyond the Democrats' seats, so the result is a brake on Trump rather than his removal. Voters named prices and the cost of living above all (AP Voter Poll), on a day when petrol averaged $4.15 a gallon, the highest of any Election Day, after Trump said on Fox & Friends that morning that 'Inflation is solved'.
Background
US midterms come halfway through a president's four-year term: the whole House (435 seats) and a third of the Senate are elected, but not the president. The president governs with Congress, which passes laws and the budget; the president can veto bills, and Congress can override with two thirds of each chamber.
Who gains, who loses
From January 2027 every law and budget needs the Democrats; Trump keeps the veto, executive orders and command of the forces; neither side alone can deliver what voters said they wanted most, lower prices.
What most coverage misses
Many viewers assumed Trump would lose his office or be removed; neither follows from losing Congress. The result is a brake: two-thirds majorities for overriding vetoes or convicting are far out of reach, so the next two years are veto against Congress.
