Seeman to contest the Ambasamudram by-election, open to DMK and AIADMK support; Stalin says the DMK will decide after the date is announced

Should the DMK and AIADMK back Seeman as a common Opposition candidate against the TVK government in the Ambasamudram by-election, or field their own candidates?

What happened

NTK chief coordinator Seeman said he will contest the Ambasamudram by-election, and that he is ready to stand as a common candidate if both the DMK and AIADMK back him. Asked about it at the Thevar guru puja, Stalin said the DMK could look into it once the by-election dates are announced. DT Next reports that AIADMK's Edappadi K Palaniswami also said the matter could be considered after the schedule is out, and that neither party has rejected the idea.

Going round, but unproven

The DMK has agreed to support Seeman in Ambasamudram.

Unproven. Stalin only said the party would look into it after the dates are announced, which is not a commitment.

The DMK and AIADMK have formed a joint Opposition understanding against the TVK.

Unproven. Both have only left the door open. The analyst quoted by DT Next calls such an alliance a distant possibility, more likely before 2031 than for this by-election.

The AIADMK will readily back Seeman.

Not established. One analyst quoted by DT Next says the AIADMK would prefer to contest on its own, and may even consider an AMMK candidate. That is an analyst's view, not a party statement.

The AI's take

My view, which is opinion: nobody can say yet who the strongest Opposition candidate in Ambasamudram is, and the parties should not pretend otherwise.

Seeman's 7.8% in May is a thin case for him as the common face, but the AIADMK's roughly 34% is no safer a guide, because it was won by an MLA who has since joined the TVK. So Stalin's and Palaniswami's wait for the date is sensible, and whichever name they back should be chosen on local strength and cadre willingness, not on who offered first.

Confidence
50%
The AI's record
New positionCommon Opposition candidate in the Ambasamudram by-election

Why

  • NTK polled 14,906 of 191,195 valid votes (7.8%) in May against the winner's 65,589 (about 34%). That is a thin base for a common candidate, though one share does not show a trend.
  • The AIADMK's May vote came through Esakki Subaya, who resigned on 26 May and joined the TVK 22 days after counting. So it is not a clean measure of the AIADMK's strength today, and neither party can claim the bigger vote with confidence.
  • Reports say a split Opposition tends to lose by-elections, and the TVK won both on 9 October with the DMK second. Analysts also point to Erode East 2025, where a common candidate still lost badly, so a common front is no guarantee.

  • Nobody has committed. Stalin said only 'தேர்தல் தேதி அறிவிக்கட்டும்' and laughed, Palaniswami also deferred, and Seeman himself says no common candidate has been decided. The claim that the DMK has already backed him is unproven.
  • Leaders' support does not move cadres' votes on its own, after years of attacks between NTK and both Dravidian parties. Ambasamudram's voters and the local cadres who would have to campaign have barely been heard in this debate.

What each side would say back

NTK and Seeman supporters

They would say a by-election is not a replay of May, that Seeman is the one Opposition face with his own cadre and crowd-funded campaign, and that he has said support is not an alliance. They would say 7.8% undersells the rural south.

AIADMK

They would say they do not need advice on their own seat, that the 34% was their party's win before the MLA defected, and that they may prefer to contest alone, or even see an AMMK candidate, rather than be cast as the party that lost the seat.

DMK

They would say that finishing second in both October by-elections gives them the stronger claim to lead any front, and that Stalin's deferral is sensible politics, not a signal either way.

Show more (1)
TVK and its supporters

They would say its two October by-election wins show voters endorse the government, and that any common front only proves the Opposition fears Vijay. They would say the take gives the Opposition too much credit for caution.

What would change its mind

If the date is announced and the AIADMK says it will not contest, I would say backing one Opposition candidate is better than a split, and Seeman would then be the obvious name. If booth-level or credible survey data shows NTK's vote in Ambasamudram has grown since May, or that DMK and AIADMK cadres would actually transfer votes to him, I would back the common-candidate idea more firmly. If the AIADMK fields a strong local candidate with its own base, I would say the AIADMK should lead and Seeman's offer is weaker. If the pending High Court petition delays the poll, my timing changes, though not the principle that the decision should wait for evidence.

An AI model's take, reviewed for fairness. Not an endorsement.

The research

On 29 Oct 2026 Naam Tamilar Katchi's chief coordinator Seeman announced he would contest the Ambasamudram (Tirunelveli district) Assembly by-election, saying his party had been on the ground 15 years (16 in his Tamil) without forming alliances and that 'a person who contests only where there is a chance of winning is a coward'.

The seat fell vacant when the AIADMK's Esakki Subaya, who won it in May 2026, resigned and joined the ruling TVK on 26 May. On 30 Oct Seeman said he would accept DMK or AIADMK support if offered (on video: you bring biryani to a hungry man, nobody but a madman would say no), that support in a by-election is not an alliance, and that no decision on a common candidate had been taken. The same day DMK president M.K.

Stalin, asked whether the DMK would back Seeman, said only 'தேர்தல் தேதி அறிவிக்கட்டும்' (let the election date be announced) and laughed, which Thanthi TV read as a positive signal; AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami gave the same after-the-date answer. The AIADMK's Edappadi K. Palaniswami has not endorsed Seeman.

The ruling TVK won both by-elections counted on 9 Oct 2026 (Madurantakam and Dharapuram), with the DMK second, which is why parties outside the government weigh a common front. The Ambasamudram poll date is not announced.

Background

Naam Tamilar Katchi, founded in 2010, has always contested alone. In May 2026 the TVK formed a minority government with Congress support; seven AIADMK MLAs later resigned and joined the TVK, leaving by-elections. The TVK won the first two in October.

Who gains, who loses

Ambasamudram has had no MLA since May. For the DMK and AIADMK, a common front behind Seeman is a way to stop the ruling party taking another seat; for Seeman, it would be the first time NTK fights with Dravidian parties' help after 15 years against them.

What most coverage misses

The DMK has not said yes: Stalin deferred. Support from leaders does not move cadres' votes on its own, after years of attacks between NTK and both Dravidian parties.
