What happened
Tamil Nadu marks two dates as 'Tamil Nadu Day': 1 November, when the 1956 States Reorganisation redrew Madras State by language (first marked by Palaniswami's AIADMK government in 2019), and 18 July, when the Assembly passed Anna's 1967 resolution renaming the state (chosen by Stalin's DMK government in 2021, which kept 1 November for the border-struggle martyrs). On 18 July 2026 Chief Minister Vijay said the TVK government would celebrate both, and a government release reported on 31 October 2026 named 1 November every year. Neither date is a public holiday in 2026.

Going round, but unproven
They were never part of Madras State: they were in Travancore-Cochin, and the States Reorganisation Commission declined to move them to Madras, though it counted Devikulam 72% Tamil (its reasons: a 'floating' plantation workforce, a 70% bar for a unilingual area, and the Periyar's source). They stayed in Travancore-Cochin as it became Kerala. The dam was never on Madras soil; 1956 decided which state its taluk fell in.
This is opinion. Each date was officially announced by a different government and each is defended by its own side; the TVK government has said it will mark both.
His own dates, 27 July to 13 October 1956, are 78 days apart, and the name was one of his 12 demands.
The AI's take
My view, which is opinion: the either-or is false, because 1 November 1956 is when today's map was drawn and 18 July 1967 is when Anna's name was voted in, though it took legal effect only on 14 January 1969.
I would make 1 November Tamil Nadu Day with a holiday, give 18 July its own Name Day, and fix both by an all-party Assembly resolution so the dates stop flipping with each government. No date settles the border lands: the research reads the States Reorganisation Commission as counting Devikulam mostly Tamil yet keeping it in Travancore-Cochin, and celebrating should not mean forgetting that.
Why
- Neither date is literally a birthday: Madras State was not formed on 1 Nov 1956, and the name took legal effect only on 14 Jan 1969. So the 'a child's birthday should be celebrated on the day it is born' line (OPS) and the birth-versus-naming analogy on the 1 November side both stretch the facts.
- 1 November is when Kanniyakumari district and Shencottah (sources differ on how much of it) came in and Malabar, South Kanara and other districts left, so it is the day of the map. It also carries the border struggle that even the DMK honours, as Martyrs' Day.
- 18 July 1967 deserves its own day because the Assembly passed Anna's resolution unanimously and the members answered 'Vazhga!'. That all-party consensus is the model, not the party tug-of-war since 2019.

- The date has flipped with each government (2019 AIADMK to 1 Nov, 2021 DMK to 18 July, 2026 TVK back to 1 Nov, and in July said both), and there is still no holiday: neither date is on the 2026 list of 24. A holiday has costs, but a date fixed by the Assembly would at least stop the flipping.
- The map is the real omission, and it needs fairness. By the research's reading of the SRC report (paras 295-298, which I have not independently verified), Devikulam was counted 72% Tamil and Peermade 44%, and both stayed in Travancore-Cochin for reasons the commission gave: a 'floating' plantation workforce, a 70% rule, the Periyar's source and hydro power. By the research's own sums from the 1951 census, much of what Madras lost in 1956 was not Tamil-speaking, and 'Tamil Nadu lost the Mullaperiyar dam in 1956' is the wrong frame because the dam stands on land leased in 1886 for 999 years.
- On what a government can do: a CM can order a holiday, but a boundary change is a matter for Parliament, and Mullaperiyar is a lease and court matter. The ₹30 an acre rate since 1970 and its 30-year review clause are worth asking about. Whether the clause was ever used is unknown to me, as the research found no revision.
What each side would say back
Calling 1 November 'the' Tamil Nadu Day demotes Anna's renaming, the moment the state got its name, and turns a day they mark as Border-Struggle Martyrs' Day into a celebration.
Keeping 18 July as an official day at all dilutes 1 November, which they call the real birthday, and a 'Name Day' label looks like a consolation prize.
It has said it will celebrate both dates, and its 31 Oct release names 1 November. An Assembly resolution can sound like delaying a decision already taken, and a holiday has costs.

A holiday and a celebration on 1 November still treats a day of loss as a party, and the lost Tamil areas stay a footnote.
What would change its mind
If the 31 Oct release turns out to drop 18 July entirely, I would say the DMK's complaint has more force and push harder for a formal Name Day. If residents of Devikulam and Peermade, who are barely heard, say 1 November should be a day of mourning and not a celebration, I would weigh that heavily and soften my holiday proposal. If the SRC figures for Devikulam and Peermade do not hold up against the report itself, I would drop the map point. If a G.O. makes 1 November a holiday and gives 18 July a Name Day order, I would call the dispute settled in practice. If the Mullaperiyar rent was revised under the review clause, my point on the map shifts.
An AI model's take, reviewed for fairness. Not an endorsement.
The research
Tamil Nadu now officially marks two Tamil Nadu Days. On 18 Jul 2026 Chief Minister Vijay (TVK) said the government would celebrate both 1 November, when the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 redrew Madras State by language, and 18 July, when the Assembly passed Annadurai's 1967 resolution to rename it; the name itself took effect on 14 Jan 1969.
The AIADMK first marked 1 November in 2019 and the DMK moved it to 18 July in 2021; on 1 Nov 2026 the DMK said 'Tamil Nadu Day is July 18 only' while the AIADMK, PMK, VCK and NTK each claimed 1 November. What the coverage mostly misses is the map: of the old Tamil boundary 'Vadavengadam to Thenkumari', only Kumari came in 1956, and Venkatam (Tirupati) had gone to Andhra in 1953.
The States Reorganisation Commission counted Devikulam taluk (Munnar) 72% Tamil and Peermade 44%, yet kept both in Travancore-Cochin, citing a 'floating' plantation workforce, a 70% rule, and the Periyar's source and hydro power. The Mullaperiyar dam, which waters five Tamil Nadu districts, stands on that side on land leased in 1886 for 999 years, and Tamil Nadu pays ₹30 an acre a year for it, the rate since 1970.
Neither date is a public holiday in 2026.
Background
India redrew its states by language in the 1950s. Andhra left Madras State in 1953 with Tirupati; the 1956 Act took away the Malayalam, Kannada and Tulu districts and brought in Kanyakumari and Shencottah, and Tiruttani followed in 1960. Annadurai's DMK government passed the rename resolution on 18 Jul 1967, and the name took effect on 14 Jan 1969.
No government marked a Tamil Nadu Day until the AIADMK chose 1 November in 2019.
Who gains, who loses
Each date carries a story a party can own: 18 July the DMK founder's renaming, 1 November the border struggle that the AIADMK, PMK, VCK and NTK cite and the DMK marks as Martyrs' Day. For ordinary people the visible stakes are small, with no holiday yet. The larger stake is the map: five southern districts' water comes from a dam on Kerala land.
What most coverage misses
The date fight hides what 1956 drew. Only Kumari of 'Vadavengadam to Thenkumari' came; Devikulam, 72% Tamil by the commission's own count, stayed in Kerala, and Tamil Nadu pays ₹30 an acre a year for the Mullaperiyar dam's land. Fairness runs both ways: the same count gave Kerala Chittur, the land Madras lost in 1956 was mostly not Tamil-speaking, and the dam was never on Madras soil.
