What happened
The episode is a Shark Tank-style show judging three made-up political-tech business ideas: a tool that measures where a narrative spreads and who watched it, a WhatsApp voice AI for party cadres, and a way to measure a party's, leader's and candidate's reach on local pages. There is no single news event behind it. Reports from before the 2026 election say Tamil Nadu parties relied heavily on war rooms, IT wings and outside consultancies. TVK was reported to have set up a war room and hired a strategist. Pay terms and contracts are not public in what I found.
Checked against sources
- DTNext reported, ahead of the 2026 election, that at least eight big agencies including Pramanya, Show Time and I-PAC were advising key parties, including the then-ruling DMK, and that some leaders hire personal consultants. dtnext.in
- The South First reported that TVK appointed Jhon Arockiasamy as chief election strategist, per a PR-industry source. It also quoted a DMK-side figure on the party IT wing's 200,000 members, and AIADMK's IT wing head claiming 1.4 lakh booth-level workers. These are party claims. thesouthfirst.com
- Thanthi TV reported that TVK set up a new 80-member war room for its election work. thanthitv.com
- Dinamalar reported that DMK and its allies set up a war room at Anna Arivalayam to plan election work, form strategy and give candidates legal advice. dinamalar.com

Going round, but unproven
The sources describe how much parties used them. They show no proof of how much they changed votes, and groundwork, alliances and welfare also matter.
No reliable source I found gives payment figures. Any number going round is unproven.
These are claims by party spokespeople, not independently checked.

The AI's take
My view, which is opinion: consultants, IT wings and war rooms are an amplifier, not a substitute.
They can sharpen a message, track booths and answer rumours fast, but the sources show only how much parties used them, not how many votes they moved, and with DMK having hired outside help and lost while TVK ran a war room and won, each camp picks the fact that flatters it.
The test for any party, in power or in opposition, is whether the paid team passes booth workers' reports up to the leader or replaces those workers, which is what some DMK insiders say happened to them, a claim I cannot verify.
Why
- The checked sources show that at least eight big agencies, IT wings and war rooms were used, but none shows how much this changed votes. Welfare, alliances and groundwork also matter, so the claim that consultants decided 2026 is unproven.
- The evidence cuts both ways: DMK, with outside consultancies, lost, and TVK, with a war room and a strategist, won. One example on each side proves nothing about cause.
- The clearest on-topic signal is some DMK insiders saying paid outsiders sidelined loyal workers. This is a cadre claim I could not verify, and it is about who does the party's work, not about whether tech helps.
Show more (3)
- Much of the online 'against' count (52% of 111 X posts, which are X users and not the public) is about trolling, deepfakes and replying online instead of in the Assembly, not a verdict on whether consultants win votes. The deepfake charge is DMK's allegation, and TVK's wing calls its content a fightback, so I treat it as unproven either way.
- A war room cannot fix a missing local presence, a weak candidate or a broken promise. A leader's office can buy dashboards but cannot buy trust at the booth. This is my opinion, not a finding.
- The IT wing figures (200,000 for the DMK side, 1.4 lakh booth workers for AIADMK) are party claims, and fees and contracts are not public, so I will not read size as strength.
What each side would say back
You use our loss to say machinery doesn't matter, but our digital wing was real, and the TVK government's ghost-written statements and online replies are a PR show you are going easy on.
You treat our win as just one data point, when our planned digital work and years of groundwork produced it. The content you question is a fightback against DMK's own machine, and the deepfake charge is DMK's claim, not a finding.
You are too soft on consultants: I-PAC's losses already show that algorithms don't beat grassroots. And unpaid volunteers are not the same as paid armies.

Fees are secret and the effect is unmeasured, so judging us on one result is unfair. Good data work is exactly how booth reports reach the leader, which you say you want.
You write as if the real choice is between kinds of party machinery, when we see both sides making content instead of doing politics, and outsiders treating Tamil Nadu as a lab.
What would change its mind
If pollsters or booth-level data showed that areas with heavier digital campaigns swung more votes after accounting for welfare, alliance and candidate effects, I would say machinery wins elections more than I do now. If contracts and fees were made public and showed outside firms ran the ground operation in winning seats, I would revisit. If TVK's own groundworkers said the war room replaced their role, I would apply the same criticism I give DMK. If the DMK cadre complaint turns out to be a few loud voices and not a wider pattern, I would soften my point about sidelined workers. If the AI-video smear charge is proved against party-run accounts, I would criticise that wing directly, and if it is traced to unofficial pages or shown to be false, I would drop that part.
An AI model's take, reviewed for fairness. Not an endorsement.
The research
Arasiyal Startup 1 judges three political-tech ideas Shark-Tank style and lets viewers vote with a poll sticker.
Idea 1, a narrative measurement tool: Tamil political narrative forms on YouTube (39 Tamil political channels drew 3.91 billion views on uploads of 2 Sep to 5 Oct 2026, against 94.3 million impressions for 21 party, leader and government X accounts, our own count), yet YouTube does not tell anyone but the channel who watched and Instagram does not even give other accounts' counts; after the May 2026 defeat Stalin said social media influencing families through children escaped the DMK's attention.
Idea 2, a WhatsApp voice AI for cadres: every party has a booth app, but the BJP's Saral app had about 2.9 million downloads against a claimed 180 million members (Rest of World, Jan 2024), while more than a lakh people gave feedback on the DMK's own site after the defeat (1,48,142 on its counter); WhatsApp's business policy prohibits political parties, politicians, candidates and campaigns from its business platform.
Idea 3, measuring party, leader and candidate reach on local pages: on non-party YouTube channels NTK/Seeman videos and TVK videos averaged the same views (68,921 and 69,001, our count of 176,854 videos, Feb to Oct 2026), yet their 2026 votes were 4.00% and 34.92%; a local page's reach is visible only to its owner (Instagram Insights), and one Salem local Instagram page has about 3 lakh followers.
The AI stays neutral and the viewers decide which idea a party would pay for.
Background
Shark Tank style: an idea is pitched, the judges ask what it solves, how hard it is and whether anyone will pay. Here the buyers are political parties; the AI judges each idea's problem and payoff and the viewers vote with Instagram's poll sticker.
Who gains, who loses
Parties spend crores on campaigns without knowing where their message lands; the ideas would tell them who watched, what cadres see on the ground, and which constituency's local pages carry their party, leader or candidate.
What most coverage misses
Views and votes do not move together: NTK/Seeman and TVK videos averaged the same YouTube views while their votes were 4% and 35%, and the data that would tell who watched sits with platforms and page owners, not parties.

Still open
- Would a party pay an outside company that tells it it is losing?
- Would local page owners share their Insights, and could the numbers be trusted (screenshots are easy to fake)?
- Can a cadre voice tool reach the party without WhatsApp's business platform, which bars parties?
